Lame or Lane?

Miss J has talked before on this site about LB and its plus-sized selection, a post which generated a lot of comment.

I have to say, I don't think the new spring/summer collection is half bad. Yes, there are some of the usual iffy suspects. But there are a few cute pieces to be had, and I think there's definitely been an improvement somewhere along the line. Though maybe I am just being swayed by better styling?

It's been so long since I was a teenager I don't know whether teenage girls these days still go through the tie-dye, joss sticks, hairband on the forehead, hippy phase? If they do the long red-pink ombre maxi-skirt is totally cute, and I love the styling with the little jacket, belt and bangles.

The colour on the periwinkle ruffle top is maybe a little too garish for me, but online there are a ton of examples of feminine ruffled tops in colours that are a little more "fashion", deep jewels, plums and teals, for example. And I love that model's haircut.

I'm also totally digging this dress:

Maybe it's just because that's the loose, sexy silhouette I'm into right now; but the pleats! The bang-on-the-knee finish! The way it skims!

So what do we think? Have you guys seen a (slight) improvement, are my eyes playing tricks, or are we seeing the usual seasonal trend, wherein spring/summer looks are always better than autumn/winter ones in the plus-sized fashion world? (I'm sorry, but it's true: sexy tanks, sweet dresses, cute v-necks, etc, always seem to be better than the winter offerings, which are inevitably dowdy.)

I feel the same way. Some of the stuff is pretty cute, and it is a big improvement over LB's usual offerings. Still too much polyester, though.

The hippy stuff is LB's attempt at doing the luxury boho trend.

The pleats on the dress scream mother-of-the-bride to me. And the boho trend is already over...WAY over.

If a non-plus sized person were even considering these clothes, it would bes suggested that they have their heads examined because there is so much better out there for them. I don't want trendy - I want STYLE. I'm 42 - way beyond Torrid or anything that hits six inches above my knee, but not ready to toss it in and hold up a Dress Barn yet either.

Totally know what you mean Maquinna. I'm only 22 and I have some funky things in my wardrobe, but I also want some classy and stylish things that aren't downright dowdy!

We are heading into Autumn here and Im really looking for a heavily styled knit and coat that isn't boring and it is so difficult!

Sometimes I feel like I do better with their tops b/c the pants just don't fit me right. I really like the blouse in the first picture. I can dress that up or down.

I'd like the long skirt if it was dark on top and faded to light on the bottom--as it is, it would just highlight my hips (who wants that?).

Lane Bryant is just like any other department-ish store. You have to go through it rack by rack. Sometimes there is something really cute, other times not so much.

I was there last week, and there were a few adorable springy dresses that I LOVED. Unfortunately, I can only wear separates from Lane Bryant, because almost all their clothing is cut for someone with a much larger chest than mine.

I still prefer autumn/winter only because I hate the heat. Some of the stuff is cute but it always makes me feel like I'm on display.

I have to say though LB is starting to get a little wiser. I work for the company so I've seen the change from 2 years ago to now.

@Manquinna, I have heard the reverse about the clothing this year. Mostly that it's not trendy at all. A lot of our customer base at the one I work at are women who range from 20-50 and I'm guessing this holds true for most LB locations. In the past the clothing was trendier but it's good to see the company trying to come to happy medium.

That haircut you like? Wig.
The model in the top left is the same as the one in the bottom right.

I can't believe my eyes... those clothes are 'fashionless'. The designer should be shot... & i'm not joking. I finally understand the word 'frumpy'. As for the pleated dress.. it looks like she's wearing corrugated steel. It's neither sexy nor elegant... they've managed to turn a beautiful young model into a 65 year old catholic granny. Does anyone agree?

LB is notorious for this kind of thing! In fact, the only thing that I can even imagine buying from them now is underwear, jeans and Figure Magazine. Really. I'm wondering if they are targeting older women with this..but even so..
Some of the stuff is cute, I like the skirts and the boho theme (I'm assuming) they're going with; but it's still no different from anything else I've seen this spring, EVERYONE is doing peasant skirts! No fitted jean minis? No cute tennis skirts? No high waisted vintage style shorts? Huh?!

why is it that all the clothes they show look ab fab but in real life they turn into rags... thanks for the pics

Just spent some time at my local LB on Sunday. It was an experience in patience- love this color, hate this fit. Find me this color elsewhere. No, that's really not much better. OK- love this fit, hate this color.

I ended up with jeans and slacks, bras and undies and yes- that very same boho skirt. It really does look quite nice on, the way it sits low on the hips brings attention to the fact that yes- I have a waist.

However, for the most part, it's cheap looking (ie: $$$ Baby Phat tshirts) or frumpy. And the colors are very much autumn instead of spring, so that threw me off.

Also- Who the heck thinks I want ruffles on my boobs? Cap sleeves? Really? You're going to put all the emphasis right there on the widest part of my upper arm AND make it poofy? No THANK you!

Yo Jenny, don't assume you can still buy Figure at LB - they are closing it down as of the last issue. Sign of the times.

I'm in my 40s. I don't treat LB as a major shopping resource for several reasons.

First, I'm a tweener who has big hips, which puts me in women's sizes. I also have classic taste, and LB often falls short of it. Talbots Woman is better for me for classic basics. Boho is beyond played.

Back at the beginning of the decade, I bought some LB because the Limited owned it. The Elemental Stretch and Designs & Co. brands were pretty decent stuff and I still wear it.

And I know they are price-sensitive, but how about some natural fabrics -- silk, wool, linen?

BTW, I live in California so I prefer spring/summer merchandise. For the fall/winter, I just wear dark colors, LOL>

I keep going back to LB - the Big 3 are right in a row at my local strip mall: LB, Dress Barn Woman, and Avenue. Two hours of browsing and trying will sometimes net me a shirt or something, usually at the top of their price ranges, but still below the Talbot's Woman items I prefer for my age bracket (60).

I sure do echo the "less polyester" sentiment. Where I live it's hot, hot, hot and you'd die in some of their clothes.

I don't like it at all. I had some RealWoman dollars so I went in over the weekend and couldn't find one article of clothing that I wanted to buy. All I was looking for was a fitted short sleeve blouse in white or cream, which is a staple, and they didn't have it. If I hadn't just bought a pair of jeans at macy's I probably would've bought the trouser cut jeans, but I couldn't justify the purchase. Most of the stuff just looks like it's made for my 60 year old mom, and my mom says that it looks like it's for me. I'm 29 and I think their clothes age me, I don't want to look older. And the young and hip line honestly looks like it's from Wal-Mart. I like their blazers, jeans, bras and panties, and thats about it these days.

I actually thought it was a huge improvement.

I don't know if they only got a minimal inventory but it seemed like a lot of the really cute stuff was sold out pretty quickly.

I loved the periwinkle top, on that model, I could never wear that color (I reflect it). And the pink skirt and denim jacket.

I think it is a combination of the new rags and the styling you mentioned. Both make a considerable difference.

I've been avoiding LB for a while now. To be honest, I think this is the first time in a long time that I've really liked what they had. Then again, it's also the first time in a long time that I've had the need for some more more "professional" clothes, so that might have something to do with it.

UUGH CAN YOU PLEASE post more often, elen miro had a whole autumm/winter fashion show that i had to read about from another blogger. with half the insight as you. LB is frumpy but there are a dozen other plus size lines you could be talking about..1 blog per month, boo.. hand the reigns to someone else if you are too busy

In Fitness and clothing plus sized women are often overlooked. Everyone is not meant to be a size two. But you can lose fat while toning your curves.

Ehh the LB plus size collection does not impress me much. If you want nice summer clothes I suggest you take a peek into Isaac Mizrahi's new collection for Liz Claiborne. Yes, Liz Claiborne. Mizrahi has done some amazing things with the line and I am becoming a HUGE fan of the collection. He uses great bright colors and really clean cuts. Finally, a great designer that cares about the full figured woman!LizClaiborne.comTake a look at the Plus-Size section. I think it's FABULOUS!

They seem to be trying harder... still pretty frumpy, though. I'm sticking with Torrid.

I am 42 years old and I HATE Lane Bryant, ol' JC Penny's cousin. There's no flavor whatsoever. And the colors?? Damn, why not just spray me with a waterhose filled with the most fugly crayola can dish out. And if I see one more "flower" print shirt, I will scream!

I lean more towards Ashley Stewart's clothes. Yeah, they do have a few LB traits, but the store I frequent has very honest salespeople. The salesman (yep, a man) who helped me gave me looks: from "That is real nice" to "You know better!" Most L/B salespersons are too stuck behind the counter, waiting.

The clothes at Ashley's have a bit more flavor and the jeans have spandex blending; a bit more forgiving for us women who have a bubble back there.

I do wish that both stores had more natural fabrics. Hell, even McDonald's has moved on from polyester.

What I see her is 'plus size
' fashion being shown on non-plus size models - thus it looks great - put it on a real plus size and that ruffle shirt would look ridiculous.
