Now on the one hand you have the naysayers who feel this is a great big publicity stunt and on the other you have the overly optimistic news items acting like the results of a reality show are going to really change the tides of fashion. Since I didn't watch this cycle and can't judge based on Whitney's overall performance I can only base what I think of her on her polaroids and the few modeling shots up on Elite. I do like what I've heard of her in a couple articles.
"I'm not going to lose 50 pounds — if someone asks me to do that, I'll go to another [modeling] agency," she said. "I've already heard online from boys and girls all over the world who are dealing with eating disorders. They're thanking me for standing up and saying, 'I am a plus-size model and I am beautiful.'"
From what I can see she's a classic beauty with a lovely look - but was we all know all the real interesting stuff on ANTM happens behind the scenes and feel free to fill me in since I missed it this time around.
Thoughts on Whitney's win? Love it? Hate it? Does it even matter anyway since lets face it the only girls to go on to have legitimate fashion careers on that show were not the winners.

I hated her all cycle. Fatima was robbed. I wanted to like Whitney but her pictures weren't that great and her attitude was fake.
My take: Winner or not, she is signed to an agency with no real clientele for her as a plus-size model (they have only mediocre mother-agent type offices in Chicago and Atlanta), and she doesn't have anywhere near the editorial appeal or modelling chops that Crystal has. If she gets any work it will be body image/esteem type stuff similar to Tocarra's, and probably then the Maxim route. After all, Paulina said Whitney's the one the guys want in their bedroom! She is still kinda stuck in no-man's land at her size. She will definitely have to use padding for plus clients, and a lot depends on whether Elite gets its act together and markets her properly.
And hello - any model that thinks she can just up and switch agencies doesn't understand how it works...ditto in saying that she will only work with clients who don't want her to change. Ummm, honey you don't necessarily get to choose who you work for!!
Her Elite measurements place her as a size 12. Don't confuse Seventeen's big caption about her "looking good in a size 14" in Italian-made bathers with her actual dress size. It's just the size that fit her - which is a lesson there for everyone in not fixating on size tags when going shopping for things that FIT!!
I agree with you DV that she doesn't get how it works. I think her jumping agencies comment while well intentioned and cute in its naïveté has to go under the sort of Top Model propaganda spiel every winner does post show. Most of them either don't get what the show is or have a sort of inflated perception of their post-show careers. I believe the last winner Saliesha was talking post show about how she had plans to be on the cover of Vogue. I don't think anyone ever tells these girls the reality of their situation.
I don't see Elite doing anything special to market her quite frankly what with all the agency switcheroo chaos that's been going on in NY these past few weeks. Not to mention the fact that she's likely their only plus size client.

I watched this cycle and loved it, I was happy that whitney won, but thought that Fatima and Anya were the real stars modelling wise...I was shocked when they revealed at the end...you can see it all on the net...:))
The only reason I wanted Whitney to win was because she was a size 10. Her personality was fairly annoying at times on ANTM, but she comes across a lot better on recent TV interviews I've seen of her. I talk about some of the rumors surrounding her big win on my blog,NotDieting.com

Apparently she has shot several fashion jobs for $25,000 a day (trying to find source link but can't right now). Well, let's see them then! Why the wait and PR teasing? Be a model OR a personality - because the industry really doesn't let you be both. Modules aren't supposed to overwhelm the clothes, don't you know? *whatevs*
Whitney is not that great. I mean I got teary eyed when she won because it inspired me to model again, but it was kind of obvious she was going to win especially during the Versace runway show. Elite does not have clients intersted in plus size. I think Whitney would have been better off just doing it the old fashion way. Actually going to go-sees. She is not that pretty and if u look at her top model portfolio it is pretty average to me. Plus Models on top model tend to do bad on the show because they are surrounded by skinny bi***es. I hate Top Model series with a passion because tehy exploit people. Ladies go to a go see and you'll know from there...
I still can't believe she is "plus-sized", to me she is slim. The modeling industry's standards of size always amaze me.
i loved whiteney from beginning to end and was SO happy when they revealed her as the winner. yes, at times she seemed a little fake, but i think all of them did at some point or another. it must be a huge challenge to try and be yourself when you have cameras constantly pointed in your face like they do on the show.
the world needs a "plus sized" model, in fact we needed it a long time ago. whitney is beautiful, strong and passionate, and was all season.
i loved whitney all show long. fatima, i dont know how she lasted so long, she was trying to ride the iman wave but she cant make a facial expression to save her life. i think ppl are underestimating the market for plus size women in high fashion, its getting better and instead of us talking about how hard it will be and what little work she would have, we should be talking about how to support companies that support our body types.

I am right around a size 10 and I can't imagine losing much more weight. That is right in the middle of the normal BMI range for my height (5'7") and I'm sure this girl is much taller than I am. I am disappointed by this. I want to see an actual PLUS SIZE girl win. I hate when they go to the designers on that show and the biggest they have is a size 4 or whatever. I mean, they KNEW the "larger" girl was coming. If I were Tyra, I'd be like, "Get your snooty, rich ass in the back and make a f**king size that fits normal people."

Sorry to break it to all of you but, this cycle like all cycles will not affect the fashion industry. People confuse reality television with reality too much. Reality TV has to be TV first, meaning it has to be dramatic and suspenseful. Designers and the fashion industry might enjoy the added attention from consumers but, they aren't really gonna change what they do because of some silly gameshow where the winner gets all expenses paid life in as a model.
None of the models that have won have gone to have serious top level careers. Sorry girls, it's just TV.
