If Simon Doonan designed a clothing line he'd focus on an oft-overlooked demographic. “I would love to do a plus-size line,” he told us at last night’s El Museo gala at Cipriani. "I think there’s a huge opportunity for doing clothes that are size 12 and up." Doonan noted it's ridiculously hard to become a somebody as a fashion designer these days. "There’s more designers than the world would ever need in a hundred million years, there’s more clothing lines, there’s 400 bloody shows in the New York fashion week. So there’s no shortage for womenswear. But I think there’s an opportunity to do insanely great things in the plus-size market," he said (ahem, Project Runway alums). He continued, "As a freakishly undersized male, I understand the plight of the oversized female. You know that thing of looking for clothes and they’re not there."
Having a selection of plus sized clothes at Barneys would be heavenly but will this ever come to fruition? My inner skeptic says no but perhaps I'm just jaded. This is one of the few times I have ever heard anyone in his position express interest in making plus sized clothing but as we all know having an interest in doing something and actually taking the initiative to do it are two very different things. He does however make an excellent point - there is a need for high quality clothing in plus sizes, only a handful of designers are making anything for the plus sized market. I'm sure Mr. Doonan would be a welcome edition - he has loads of personal style and his book Eccentric Glamour was a witty ode to fashion non-conformity. Lets see if he puts his money where his mouth is.

Simon Doonan interviewed Marc Jacobs (I think it was either Elle or Marie Claire, don't remember) and Jacobs also expressed interest in designing plus-size clothing - he even mentioned it would be the same aesthetic as his smaller clothing.
The designer who is in charge of Barney's personal clothing line (can't think of his name right now) was very snippy about designing larger clothing, and I think he even said he would refuse to do it.
I really wish there was interesting plus size clothing. I'm borderline, 12-16. Most of my shopping is at the chain stores, with some DKNY. I'm very surprised at the Marc Jacobs comment. His stuff doesn't work on my body at all. I recently tried on a Marc by Marc Jacobs jacket that fit, but it had weird pleats right at the level of the breast but on the side, effectively making me look like a box on top.
I welcome anything either Jacobs or Doonan can come up with!
And, I agree that 12-16 needs better representation. When I was a 14 I had a harder time finding clothes than I do now...
I think that is great because if you think about it there are more designers catering to smaller sizes which is pretty dumb. The American market is larger than ever. Think of it this way. A pool filled way more in capacity will overflow where as a pool with a couple of swimmers will not. Get the idea?
You know, Doonan's been around for a loooong time with Barney's and he has good cred, but I keep looking at that shirt and thinking "good God please NO". Whatever he may think he knows about what 'freakishly undersized males' want in their wardrobe, he is surely NOT in a position to know what women want in a plus-size line. It's all talk until he actually does something worth reporting. Frankly, I just think that every designer out there should make their lines from size 4 or whatever through to a size 24. Forget calling it a specialty-size line, just make the damn clothes that are already designed and in production in larger sizes and get them selling already. Yeah, there's a market for them. Tell us something we don't know. Sheesh.
It's strange that he would choose the most freakishly thin mannequins to display his clothes and feel that there should be larger sizes available. I think that Barneys has enough floor space around to start having larger sizes and perhaps within the next 2 years they can convince companies to at least license out their names and do Company XX for Barneys and have it be "plus sized"
Even if they go plus size, odds are it won't go up to what I wear anyway, sadly.
It's certainly an underserved market, and Simon Doonan's great, but I don't know if Barney's would go for it.
wow plus size is 12- 16??????? What the???? What about those of us who are a size 26, what is that considered?
I wonder if designers imagine that only poor people - who'd never be able to afford their clothes, anyway - are heavy. Because, I know plenty of high earners, both male and female, who are plus-sized and lot of money is burning a hole in their pockets as they search high and low for flattering, high quality, stylish clothes.
