Will Success Spoil Beth Ditto?

Its hard to keep up with Beth Ditto this month. She's moved from rockin' musician to full fledged fashion icon with an editorial in the Fall/Winter issue of cutting edge British glossy Pop and an interview in the September edition of Vogue Paris, arguably the single most important fashion magazine in existence.

The Size Hero edit in Pop, styled by Katie Grand and shot by Steven Klein is as artistic and eye catching as the magazine's typical fare and features a glammed up Beth cavorting with male model Blake in the seasons choice outfits. Many specially made for Ditto just for the shoot - glamorous clothing yes but its a bit disheartening to know that the average girl will never have a shot at any of these things. I wouldn't mind a Hussien Chalayan dress in my closet, thats for sure.

The Vogue Paris interview contains a couple of very beautiful snaps and what appears to be a profile focused mainly on The Gossip's success. Though with my rather appalling command of the french language I could be entirely wrong. Eternal gratitude to anyone who can provide accurate translation.

It seems as though Beth is becoming more and more known, not just for her band but also for her status as a plus sized woman in an industry that isn't particularly known for his celebration of difference. I can't help but wonder whether the fashion press truly embraces her or if they are merely latching on to her seemingly endless cache of cool. Magazine's like Pop and Vogue Paris are known for being cutting edge so seeing Beth within their pages isn't as much of a shock but as Beth becomes more well known and ultimately more mainstream does the impact of her message get diluted? Is it less about plus sized girls and more about Beth Ditto, Rock Star?

How do you feel about the fashion world's current love affair with Beth?

Thanks to Dieselmax at tFS for scanning the lovely preview of Pop's editorial

Any publicity is good publicity. Imagine! A plus size girl being cool! We know it happens in the real world, but this could really open up a lot of peoples' eyes.

Beth Ditto is simply too unattractive to advance size-acceptance in any meaningful way. Rather, she only reinforces negative stereotypes of plus-size women being ugly. And Beth's physical unattractiveness has nothing to do with her size. She simply has an unattractive face, unappealing hair -- and the tattoos are turn-offs.

Until full-figured women have more attractive representatives (i.e. models who are as gorgeous as any '80s supermodels in their heyday), size-acceptance is going nowhere.

Anon, YOU may think she is unattractive, but others do indeed find her attractive.

Personally, I find her sexy. She's talented, intelligent, and is showing people that not every plus size female hides behind baggy cartoon t-shirts and spandex pants.

Although the notion of normal and successful plus size women is not lost to us, it is to most in the mainstream. So to have a woman like Beth in the forefront being viewed as cool is indeed a step forward.

Not only that, she does not apologize for her size (nor should she). She embraces it, she works it, and she views it positively.

I'd say that's pretty darn good.

Anon Number One - What? Seriously. What?

I mean, I don't find Beth particularly attractive personally, but to say that size acceptance will only come when the person is model-beautiful is ludicrous. Also, side note: I am so glad to know that tattoos are such a turn off! I'm going to go laser mine off right now, 'coz you said so.

Must admit I didn't "get" Beth until I saw the photoshoot in Pop mag, but now I do!

Nothing wrong with tats either - admit I'm not so much a fan of tats featuring cartoon faces & figures, but I love carefully-considered symbolic/tribal ones round the lower back area...

I get what anon#1 is saying. It's a matter of taste and if we're going to advocate size acceptance, then we have to face the fact that not everyone will love the punk aesthetic that Beth represents.

Beth is cool and all, but to be fair, a successful bid for size acceptance should include elegant, refined plus sized women, not just the edgy ones.

Not everyone likes tatoos--I'm old enough to remember a time when most people outside the Navy didn't have them. Bare, unadorned skin of all colors is beautiful all by itself.

all i know is that the gossip canceled their upcoming tour because their new LIVE album won't be ready in time. super lame!

I think its great that beth is following her dreams and is successful even at her weight (imagine that...)
I don't really like to think she is the poster girl for all fat girls. I dont listen to her music, I dont care for what magazines say is cool or not, and she is my voice.
I think she is doing her thing and people are responding to that.
Its just annoying that people analyse the attention she is getting so much. She is doing her thing and good for her.
Isnt the "fashion world" (not sure who that embodies) always looking for something new and shocking? I dont think fat people are new and shocking, but if you put us in a bikini then watch out.

I have to go with Glamazon's POV. I am a fan of elegance and refinement, and that element has to be included.
But I do get why people would be fans of Beth D., because she is different and edgy.

And in addition to style, successful size-acceptance bids, IMO, have to encompass all races. It's safe to celebrate Jen Hudson, Queen Latifah, Mo'Nique because there's an expectation that minority women are big, but that's a whole other post.

From what I see, it's much harder for Caucasian women because of the dieting/Hollywood pressure.

i am sorry but i feel she gives a bad name to plus size modeling. she just looks unhealthy.

I think she is gorgous but she is really overweight and that is not naturally healthy. Having curves is another thing from being obese.

Beth is gorgeous and I love her voice. Good for her. :D

I love Beth - I think she is totally hot and I love that she does not give a fu*k about what people say about her size.

She is talented and fearless.

More women should be fearless, rather than robots and conformists.

Emilee and the last anonymous - you cannot assess the health of an individual just by looking at them, unless you happen to be psychic. A good example is many of the thin models - who now seem to be abusing prescription medication, cigarettes, and steroids. Being thin doesn't make you a healthy person. I think you could enlighten yourself by checking out some fat acceptance blogs - a woman named Kate Harding is a good place to stat. Google her name, and it will lead you to a wealth of information.

haha. i love how skinny people are all "eww. plus size?" and now plus size people are all "eww. super size?" we spend so much energy and time about how the fashion industry is unfair to us, and here there are people trying to exclude fat people who are bigger than "curvy." sheesh... get a life.

Most of the time I feel that fellow fat women don;t like her because of how comfortable she is in her own skin and doesn't feel the need to dress to HIDE her body. She shows off every lump and curve because she loves and adores herself. She is also the sweetest human being I have ever met.

I like Beth Ditto and think she's generally pretty hot. Tattoos don't turn me off or anything.

But, so often when I see pictures of her, she's such a hot mess. It's one thing to wear form fitting clothes to show off curves, it's another to pour yourself into a dress that's easily three sizes too small. Or one picture of her I saw, looked like she was wearing a top and pantyhose. Edgy, no. Looked like she was so drunk/stoned/ whatever that she'd forgotten her pants. Not that I can tell from just looking at a picture that someone is on mind altering substances, but that's what I'd assume coming across a person dressed like that.

Sexy as heck, yeah. My fashion icon, no way.

I think that its great to see alternative people in magazine, but I am wary of this because Beth Ditto is an out lesbian, who used to love talking about it and now it seems as yothought hat is getting played down

Beth Ditto looks amazing in these pics.

Yes, she's a bit rude and kinda loud, but she makes up for it by being mindblowing cool.

I've heard her say that she eats two cartons of ice cream sometimes to stay her size and that's just wrong , through. It's unheatlhy for her and ice cream is not a great thing to eat in high doses anyway.

Beth, eat some veggies or fruit.

please.
